About Us
Planks emerged from two decades absorbed in skiing and being in the mountains. From dry slope beginnings to being a ski bum in the Alps on to professional skiing and then starting up a brand, the main objective has remained the same - to live in the mountains and ski as much as possible.
The early Planks years involved a few hundred stickers and 30 tee shirts to test the response to the name and it was three years later in 2008 we decided to focus on Planks full time. Armed with a range of tee shirts we asked a friend who had a shop in Val d’Isere to sell them. They were a huge success and we realized that skiers wanted their own identity. After years in snowboarding’s shadow, a new wave of skiing was changing ideas of what was possible and with it came a need for a skier’s brand.
Planks at this stage was few tee shirt designs, a box of colored pens, bits of t-shirt shaped material and lots of enthusiasm. We had the brand name and logos and support from skiers in the industry. A small team of great riders was brought together. Seasonaires were going mad for the "Drop Cliffs Not Bombs" products and Planks was going from strength to strength.
Planks was looking good on the outside, but behind the scenes it needed help on the business side of things and improvement in production. So in 2009 a new business partner joined the team, production was moved and the scale of the operation was increased dramatically.
2009/10 saw the team of three renting a small flat in Val d'Isère and the focus was to build on the success in that one resort to sell to more shops all over France. After a great season, some epic turns, a smashed elbow and a snapped ACL, we managed to get Planks into ski stores in major ski resorts around Europe. Support for Planks grew and placing the brand in key UK stores like Snow + Rock gave us even more confidence, so we decided to widen the range.
2010 brought the amazing opportunity to open a Flagship store in Val d’Isere. There was a small old video store in the center of town that needed some love, so, after a frantic week of getting together some funds from friends and 4 days of manic 24-hour renovation the Planks store was open.
The snow never really came and people said it was the worst snow season in 30 years, but we had fun and a whole future product range was designed and is in the pipeline. The store is a great success, new friendships are being made all the time and Planks is starting to find new distributors and shops taking the brand worldwide. Planks is now stocked in over 14 countries.
In 2011 the brand is stronger than ever, our new range is the best so far and we have added new products including “Ride In” hoods. We have not finished yet; more new products are on their way.
