It's been a big year in the Planks universe so we wanted to tell you all about it. Read on to learn about how we kept the planet at the core of our activities throughout 2023.
Removing single-use plastic from the Planks eco-system is a really important mission to us, and we're stoked to have made great strides towards this with our ‘Leave No Trace’ garment bags. 2023 was the first full year we have shipped all new product in these water soluble, ocean safe, recyclable, compostable, and fully biodegradable bags. They break down into harmless biomass, leaving no microplastics, no toxins, and no trace. We pack your gear in these, then into 100% recyclable and compostable mailer bags which we encourage you to re-use however you can before sending onto the recycling.
PROTECT OUR WINTERS PARTNERSHIP
We're proud long-standing partners of POW UK (Protect Our Winters UK). In 2023, we committed to supporting POW's SEND IT for for climate campaign, distributing prepaid POW postcards on all UK orders. This is because the UK is not on track to achieve its mission of reaching net zero emissions by 2050, and POW's postcards outline the policy commitments needed for the Government to get us back on track. With these postcards, and through POW's online campaign, we are encouraging outdoor enthusiasts to join us and SEND IT for climate! Learn more here.
This Black Friday, we decided to opt out of the sale madness and instead use our platform to give back. We donated 20% of sales to POW over the peak 5 days, to help support the great work that POW does.
You may already know that we have taken the POW pledge to be net zero by 2040. We are working towards this as an ongoing mission, find out more on that here.
2023 marked another year where all of our outerwear was made using recycled polyester, and our streetwear was made with either 100% Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) certified organic cotton, Polartec® fleecing, or recycled polyester.
We really don't like that plastic litters our oceans and landfills. That's one of the reasons why we it as a material in our manufacturing instead, to hopefully remove this type of waste product from ending up where it shouldn't be. Recycled polyester also has a significantly lower carbon footprint than virgin polyester, so it was a win-win to us.
We are currently calculating Planks’ carbon footprint with external consultants Aktio, so that we can identify and implement a carbon reduction plan, as part of becoming net zero by 2040. Keep your eyes peeled for more on this in early 2024. We'll be sure to keep you updated with our progress.
