The Backcountry Bucket List

What line d'you want to rip before you kick the bucket? The freeride fanatics amongst us will no doubt have a lengthy list already. For those who don't, we've picked a handful of our freeride athletes to share their dream descents with you. From Scottish gullies to BC pillows, we've got plenty of inspiration for you from our resident rippers.

One of my dream faces is Mont Noble, Switzerland, which is accessible from the lifts of a tiny resort called Nax. I can see the Mont Noble face from the highest point of my home resort, I have always been amazed by its beauty. There are some truly amazing lines to ride. The terrain is exposed, but I hope that one day the conditions will be good enough (and stable enough) to ski my dream lines on that beauty.

There are plenty of zones that I would love to explore on my skins. There is one in particular that I've been dreaming of. Not far from my home spot there is a nature reserve called Vallon de Rechy - it's absolutely magical. It’s an entire, but little valley, which is completely wild, with no lifts or villages. It has tons of amazing runs, backcountry spots and huge lines to ski.

My home spot is well known for cool runs in the forest. Even during a snowstorm or a flat-light day there are some nice spots to ride between trees. There are some "classic" and "official" runs that everyone knows, but there are also some "local only" zones, which are absolutely epic... I can't tell you more (otherwise the locals will kill me).

Unfortunately, I haven't skied much lift accessible freeride terrain, because I spend most of my time in the park on trips abroad. From seeing a lot of videos online and watching "G.N.A.R" countless times, Squaw Valley in California looks like such a fun place to ski and send some cliffs beneath the chairlift!

Ski Touring Freeride

My most recent tour in the Lawers mountain range in Scotland was a real favourite. We were lucky enough to go above the clouds (a rarity in Scotland) and skinned over Two Munros to reach a super sick face on Ben Lawers. The face was relatively steep with slushy gullies. We finished the day with some grass skiing back to the car! In the future, the more technical and gnarly gullies in the Torridon mountains in the North West Highlands are on my bucket list!

Earlier this season, Scotland had some of the best snow it's had in years. We were able to shred pillows, cliffs and pow between the trees on a small hill beside Aviemore. Usually, no one would think about skiing it. I never really thought I would be skiing pillows and tree lines in Scotland, so that’s definitely up there!

The best lift accessible freeride that I know of is at Kicking Horse mountain resort in Golden, BC. The runs are steep, deep and full of things to jump off. The lack of line-ups is pretty sweet too.

As far as ski touring goes, it's impossible to beat or even match the Duffy Lake road in between Pemberton and Lillooet, BC. It offers short tree runs with lots of pillows and long mountaineering missions where you're skiing an Alaskan-style face. It's endless out there, whether you want to ski pillows or a 2800m peak. It's the mecca of the coast range.

The best-kept secret close to Pemberton is Zippermouth Creek. You access it with skis and snowmobiles. It offers some of the craziest pillow stacks in Pemberton, and the alpine zone is full throttle gnar. It's not for the faint-hearted as a lot of the lines have close-out airs, or are over massive, unrideable cliffs. Oh, and it's over 50 degrees steep in spots.

Shooter run at Treble Cone, NZ. Best inconsistent cold chop or spring corn. Straight off the lift, it starts with some techy steep cliff options, then multiple sick hits coming out of a curving gully that you can take as big as you like.

Ski Touring Freeride

Lady Emily Hut, Cass Valley, Mt Cook National Park, NZ: a 3.5 hour 4WD, then a 2-hour hike/tour brings you to an epicly located mountain hut that’s cosy and warmed heated by a log burner, with endless free riding options.

Now that would not be secret if told, would it… But since you asked. Altas chutes in a storm, the worse the storm the better it is!

I’ve been admiring the Kings & Queens contest in Jackson Hole for quite some time now. I would love to ski that resort, as there are so many features and I’m curious to see what Corbet’s Couloir looks like in person!

The Spearhead Traverse is a Whistler staple I would love to say I did one day!
